Is there a way to have the access denied screen come up directly without the login prompt for users trying to go to pages they don't have permission for.  in IIS I am using integrated windows authentication and in the sharepoint configuration Kerberos.

Are you in SPS 2003?  I have not been able to find a workaround for that either.

I did some reading on authentication and though it may be obvious to others, the prompt is being generated by the browser.  IE will prompt for correct username/password up to three times.  This led me to Microsoft KnowledgeBase article (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/182569) that discussed all the zone registry settings, thinking that I could either disable this prompt (in which case you'd get Access Denied, automatically), or set the number of times it prompts to 0 in the registry since this article provided Hkey paths.

If this sparks inspiration for someone else to take this further, great.

As an alternative, WSS v3 and MOSS 2007's answer to this issue is to leverage what Audiences in SPS 2003 offered...hide those links that you should not see to begin with.  This prevents anyone from clicking on something they don't already have access to.  This presents a whole new set of issues for the help desk, though, when users call and can't find the links the help desk reps are telling them are there.  ;-)  Don't know how soon you might be planning an upgrade to SharePoint 2007, but this may solve your problem in the future.

Hope this helps.
